This particular story featuring the original series cast
is rather unusual for a variety of reasons. Its a historical story with
no monsters in it. This was relatively common for the first three or four
years of the series run. When the TARDIS materialises in an Aztec
temple in the 15th century Barbara is mistaken for the reincarnation of
Yetaxa, the Aztec's High Priest. She is determined to use her influence
to stop the ritual sacrifices that the Aztecs made to their god.
The Doctor argues with her that she cannot change history
but she tries anyway. The four companions get caught up in the intrigues
of the Temple and are eventually forced to flee back to the TARDIS. This
is perhaps the only Doctor Who story where the bad guys actually win.
The story is full of delightful little touches. The villains almost
Shakespearian dialogue. The Doctor tricked into marriage. Perhaps the most
striking thing about this story though are the sets which are absolutely
stunning.
